El Dorado, Kan. - When your baseball team is on a winning streak, the last thing you want is a long break.
Once again, Mother Nature has not been completely cooperative with the El Dorado Broncos, who have won seven games in a row following a 5-0 performance in their own Fourth of July Baseball Festival over the holiday weekend.
After two scheduled days off, the Broncos got an unexpected (and unwanted) third as their scheduled game with Joplin at McDonald Stadium Tuesday night was rained out. El Dorado owner-manager J.D. Schneider is hoping the weather will hold up as the Broncos will try to play a doubleheader Wednesday night, starting a 6 p.m., then wrap up the series Thursday night at 7:05 before heading off to Hays for the weekend.
“Oh, of course, we want to keep playing,” Schneider said Wednesday morning. “We want to keep this streak going. The last thing we want is for our momentum to stop.”
The Broncos head into the second half of the Jayhawk League schedule at 9-8 (19-10 overall). El Dorado currently sits in fifth place, but only a half-game behind fourth-place Liberal (10-8) and a full game behind third-place Nevada (12-9), who defeated Hays 7-2 Tuesday night. The Larks (13-8) fell a half-game behind idle Derby (14-8) on top of the league standings. Joplin, meanwhile, is coming off a 12-3 win at Derby Monday night.
“The league just keeps getting harder and harder,” Schneider said. “There are no easy games in the Jayhawk League. We’re not taking anybody lightly.”
Schneider is still awaiting official word on the status of leading hitter Preston Springer, who injured his left arm in a collision at first base against the Denver Cougars Friday night. Springer went back to Dallas, Texas, to have a doctor give a full examination. He is expected back in El Dorado Thursday.
“We’re hoping to have him back for the Hays series this weekend,” Schneider said. “At this point, it looks like he’s still questionable for that series. We’re hoping for the best, but we don’t think he’ll be out much longer than the weekend.”
The Broncos are scheduled to start their doubleheader against Joplin at 6 p.m. at McDonald Stadium, weather permitting.
