There was some admitted revenge factor in the minds of the Circle Thunderbirds as they prepared to play the Wichita Trinity Knights in a Class 4A Maize South regional Friday night.
That revenge turned into motivation as the Thunderbirds allowed only four field goals and 10 points in the first half on the way to a 53-32 victory over the Knights to get into the title game against Rose Hill.
“We were pretty mad when we lost because we knew we were the better team,” said Circle junior Alex Gardinier. “We were a little surprised we held them to only 10 points, but it was not surprising that we all stepped it up.”
The Thunderbirds had lost to the Knights in overtime in the seventh place game of the Bluestem Classic at El Dorado High’s Alumni Court, and it was a bitter pill to swallow for the Circle boys.
Circle never gave the Knights a chance as the T-Birds scored the first 13 points of the game and built the lead up to 21-2 early in the second quarter. The score was up to 32-10 by halftime.
Trinity (15-7) shot 4-of-23 from the field and turned the ball over 10 times before intermission. Circle finished 11-of-26 from the field after 16 minutes of play with Gardinier and Eric Shepherd scoring all eight of their points in the first half.
Circle increased the lead to 43-17 by the end of the third quarter, which was the widest margin the T-Birds had over Trinity.
Kanyon Kinder led Circle in scoring with 12 points, while Brett Tunnell added 11. Jason Netherton led Trinity with 12 points and Morgan Burns added seven in the loss.
