El Dorado, Kan. - The El Dorado Broncos will be heading into the second half of their Jayhawk League schedule with plenty of momentum. Now, they need to make the best of it. The Broncos went 5-0 over the three-day Fourth of July Baseball Festival at McDonald Stadium, wrapping it up Saturday night with a pair of victories. El Dorado fought back from an early deficit to defeat the Newton Rebels, 4-2, in their first game, then knocked off the Park City Rangers in the late game, 4-1, to increase their winning streak to seven games and move their overall record to 19-10. Newton scored single runs in the first and third innings off Bronco starter Alex Mauricio for an early 2-0 lead, but the Broncos evened the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Williams singled up the middle to lead off the frame, then stole second before Robert Abel hit a deep fly ball to the gap in right-center. The Newton center fielder made a dive for the ball, but the base umpire ruled he did not catch it. Abel ended up with a double while Williams stopped at third. “I thought I saw him move on the ground like he was trying to find the ball,” Abel said later. “So I just kept running.” The Broncos took advantage. Tanner Rindels singled to score Williams and move Abel to third. After Matt Koch hit into a double play, Abel scored the tying run on a wild pitch. El Dorado took the lead in the fifth. Chris Biguenet walked, went to second on a passed ball, took third on a bunt single by Jaime Armendariz and scored on a single by Matt Davis. Rindels added a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth for an insurance run. Rindels’ tournament performance moved his average up to .396 on the season. “It was a high fastball,” Rindels said of his home run. “It felt pretty good off the bat. I felt like I was seeing the ball really well out there.” Mauricio went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Harrison Kuroda retired four of the five batters he faced, all on strikeouts, to save his second game in as many nights. Rindels and Williams each had two of El Dorado’s nine hits. The Broncos picked up their third win against Park City in five days in the late game. El Dorado scored three runs in the third inning. Armendariz reached on an error and was sacrificed to second by Davis. Williams and Abel followed with back-to-back RBI doubles, with Abel taking third on a throwing error and scoring on a groundout by Rindels. El Dorado added one more run in the fourth. Biguenet led off with a double and took third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Armendariz, Davis followed with an RBI single. Ryan Hanna got the start for the Broncos and allowed just one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out five. Matt Hinds pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out four. The Broncos had just five hits, but four of them were doubles, including two from Abel. The Broncos swept a pair of games against the Denver Cougars Friday night, 8-6 and 4-0. The Cougars scored six runs in the top of the first in the opener, but the Broncos held Denver scoreless the rest of the night. El Dorado started their comeback in the opener in the third. Heath Wall bunted for a hit before Biguenet hit his first home run since recently joining the Broncos to make the score 6-2. Armendariz walked, Davis singled and Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two out. Rindels then hit a sharp grounder which was booted by the second baseman for a two-run error. The Broncos tied the game in the fourth. Armendariz singled with one out and Davis bunted for a hit. After a double steal, Abel drove both in with a double to the wall in right-center. El Dorado took the lead for good in the seventh. Abel led off with an infield single and went to second on a groundout by Preston Springer. Koch and Wall followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. The bullpen took care of the rest. Relievers Steve Trevino, Richie Sandoval and Kuroda combined to allow just two hits over 8 1/3 innings after the Cougars’ first-inning outburst. The Broncos scored a run in the first inning of the nightcap on singles by Davis, Williams and Springer. The score would remain 1-0 until the eighth, when El Dorado pushed across three more runs with two out. Rindels singled, Brad Weiss was hit by a pitch and Wall singled to score Rindels. Jared Broadbent followed with a two-run double to score Wall and pinch-runner Bryant Cotton. Mostly, though, the late game was about Bronco starting pitcher Alex Marney. The Oklahoma State product pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits, one of them a leadoff double in the first inning. Jim Clancy finished off the shutout, allowing one hit in two innings. “I made a mistake to that first batter, but I managed to get into a rhythm after that,” Marney said. “I was able to locate my fastball and mix in my curve well. Also, the defense did a great job behind me.” The defense played an errorless game, including several great catches. Abel, playing shortstop, left his feet to catch two line drives. “We’re getting more comfortable defensively,” Abel said. “We’ve been playing together for 29 games now, and our timing has gotten a lot better.” Leading hitter Springer (.446), who injured his left arm in a collision with a Denver baserunner Friday night, is expected to return in time for the Broncos series at Hays, which starts Friday. El Dorado will host a three-game series against Joplin starting Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
