The Gardner-Edgerton Lady Trailblazers made the decision to go back home after their first round game of the Lady Cat Classic.
Sleeping in their own beds and returning Saturday to El Dorado seemed to had done the trick for the Lady Blazers in a 50-43 victory over the Circle Lady Thunderbirds in a semifinal game of the tournament.
“I don’t think we were ready to play (Friday), but we came bcak all excited to play,” said Gardner’s Kiley Reindl Boden.
The Lady Blazers allowed one field goal in the final seven minutes of the game to overcome a five-point deficit on the way to the win in a semifinal contest of the Lady Cat Classic at EHS Alumni Court.
Seven of Gardner's points in the final quarter came off Circle turnovers. The Lady Blazers (7-4) were 4-of-9 from the floor and six of eight free throws after taking the lead to seal the victory.
“I was real proud of their effort,” said Gardner coach Scott Schaefer. “We played a lot of kids and they know that when all else fails, that we do a good job of guarding people.”
Circle (10-2) scored nine of the first 13 points before the Lady Blazers used an eight-point run on the way to tie the game at 11-11 after one period of play. The two teams traded the lead for most of the second quarter with Gardner scoring the final four points to push ahead 26-24 at halftime.
The Lady Thunderbirds came out strong in the third quarter, scoring nine of the first 12 points of the stanza and extended the lead to 39-34 with one period remaining. Kyrstie Ehm scored 11 points in the quarter for Circle.
“We knew we had to overcome their press and that had been one of our downsides,” said Circle coach Brian Henry. “We did a good enough job for about 28 minutes; then that last four minutess, we had two or three turnovers and (they) get a couple of offensive rebounds and we go from up five to being down.”
Ehm scored 22 points for the Lady Thunderbirds. Reindl Boden had 10 to lead Gardner in scoring, while Kari Devlin, Cassie Wait and Brittney Parks scored nine apiece.
Gardner-Edgerton will play Wichita Collegiate in the championship game, while Circle will play El Dorado in the third place game. Times and dates have not been set.
