El Dorado, Kan. - With two Butler Community College softball players already having signed to be teammates next season in the Missouri Valley Conference, two more Grizzlies have officially signed to be teammates at another NCAA Division I university.
Second baseman Amber Freeman and pitcher Catherine Gunther have committed to play at Southeastern Louisiana University next season. Freeman and Gunther had previously passed on several other Division I offers to get the opportunity to continue as teammates. Previously, pitcher Lauren Supak and third baseman Andrea Weiss had signed to play at Missouri State University in Springfield.
With five Division I signees in 2007 and four more this season, Butler has had more players sign with Division I schools in the last two years than the other 19 community-college programs in the state of Kansas combined. Several other Butler players are also currently considering Division I and Division II offers.
“I think that speaks volumes about not only our player development here at Butler, but the quality of athlete that we are getting as well,” said Butler head coach Doug Chance.
Southeastern Louisiana is an NCAA Division I university located in Hammond, Louisiana, and a member of the Southland Conference.
In the meantime, the Lady Grizzlies’ season is not over yet. Butler (48-6), ranked #10 in the country, has qualified for the 16-team NJCAA Women’s World Series May 15-17 at Plant City, Florida. Butler went 1-2 at Nationals last year and finished as one of the top 12 teams in the nation.
