El Dorado, Kan. - The El Dorado High School softball team finished their regular season on a winning note, sweeping a makeup home doubleheader against Andover Tuesday night at East Park.
The Lady Cats held off a late rally to win the opener, 5-3, then rolled to a 12-2, five-inning win in the second game. El Dorado will go into next week’s Regional Tournament with a record of 7-13. The ‘Cats finished fourth in AVCTL Division III at 4-6.
“We reallly needed these two games, especially after two tough losses at Clearwater Monday,” said EHS head coach Jane Squires. “Our pitchers bounced back and did very well, and our hitters and defense did a great job of backing them up. We’re hoping this will give us some momentum going into Regionals.”
In the opener, El Dorado scored first in the second inning on consecutive two-out singles by Jessica Currier, Alyssa Ruff and Kellie Fagg. They would add two more in the fifth when Katie Byard reached on an error, Lauren Roedel walked and both scored when Brea Rice reached on another error. The Lady added two more in the sixth. Haley Bergen singled and eventually came around to score on an error. Roedel later doubled to score Byard to make it 5-0.
Pitcher Byard kept Andover scoreless until the seventh, when the Trojans scored three runs to make it close. Byard allowed three runs on eight hits with four walks and eight strikeouts over seven innings.
El Dorado jumped ahead 4-1 after the first inning of the nightcap, then extended it to 6-2 in the third on an RBI double by Currier and an RBI single by Ruff. The ‘Cats put the game away with a six-run fourth. Rice had a two-run single, Currier had another RBI single and Ruff finished the rally with a two-run triple. Ruff also pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out two.
“Our young players have talent and skill,” Squires said. “They just need the confidence. Games like these should help in that area. It should also help that we’re hosting the Regional this year.”
The Lady Cats were swept at Clearwater Monday, but it took the host Indians 20 innings to do so. The first game was a marathon 13-inning game won by Clearwater, 4-3, and the Indians used the momentum from that win to shut out the Wildcats in the second game, 6-0.
In the first game, the Lady Cats jumped ahead 3-0 with three runs in the top of the third inning. Clearwater quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. El Dorado held on to their one-run lead until the sixth, when the Indians pushed across a run to tie the game.
After that, Byard kept the game even with a strong pitching performance, but the Clearwater pitcher matched goose eggs with Byard for six more innings. Clearwater finally scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 13th. The Indians finished the game with 12 hits to El Dorado’s six. The Lady Cats also had four errors in the game to Clearwater’s two.
After such a tough loss, the Lady Cats fell flat in the second game, as they were shut out on two hits. Clearwater scored a run in the bottom of the third inning, then added three in the fifth and two in the sixth off Ruff. Clearwater finished the game with eight hits and had one error to El Dorado’s two.
The Class 4A Regional Tournament will be at East Park, with first-round games taking place Monday. The eight-team field includes El Dorado, Andale, Circle, Haven, Buhler, Cheney, Nickerson and Hesston. Pairings and game times will be available later in the week.
