El Dorado, Kan. - It was a strange finish, but also a happy one for the El Dorado High School baseball team against Andover Tuesday night at McDonald Stadium.
Christian Locke scored the second game’s winning run on a wild pitch for a 6-5 Wildcat victory, giving EHS (8-2, 13-7) the AVCTL Division III title for 2008. Andover (7-3, 15-5) had won the opener, 10-8, setting up the dramatics in the nightcap.
“I love the way our guys never gave up and just kept fighting,” said EHS head coach Brad Long. “That’s the way they’ve been all season long. It’s been a lot of fun to coach these guys this season, and hopefully, we can keep this up at the Regional Tournament.”
The visiting Trojans jumped on Wildcat starting pitcher Tyler Barnes for six first-inning runs in the opener, then scored twice more in the second for an 8-1 lead. The Wildcats would scratch their way back to 8-4 in the third on a two-run single by Remington Rebstock. With one out in the fourth, Locke singled and scored on a double by Josh Dotson. After a single by Steven Shaver, Tyler Banion smashed a three-run home run to tie the game at 8-8.
The bad news for the ‘Cats was they would only have one baserunner the rest of the game. Andover pushed across single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, then held on for the win. Banion had two hits and three RBI. Banion also scored twice, as did Locke and Dotson.
The ‘Cats fell behind again in the second game, as Andover scored three in the second and two in the third for a 5-1 lead. In the fifth, El Dorado got a two-run homer from Chris Smith to cut the margin to 5-3, then tied it with two more in the sixth. Dotson led off with triple and Rebstock was hit by a pitch with two out. Baylor Parker singled to score Dotson and move Rebstock to third. Barnes followed with another single to score Rebstock.
In the top of the seventh, with two out and a runner on third, shortstop Dotson snagged a grounder back up the middle and fired a low throw to first, which was dug out of the dirt by Stuart Kelley for the third out, saving a run and setting up the Wildcats’ winning rally.
Locke reached second base on an error with one out, and Dotson was intentionally walked. Shaver hit into a force play at second to put runners at first and third with two out. The first pitch to Banion skipped past the catcher, and Locke scored the winning run, setting off a celebration of the league title on the field.
Parker had two hits in the second game while Smith drove in two runs. Banion pitched a complete game and did not allow a run after the third inning.
This year’s Class 4A Regional Tournament will be at McDonald Stadium, with first-round games taking place Monday. The eight-team field includes El Dorado, Circle, Augusta, Rose Hill, Andover Central, Andover, Mulvane and Douglass. Pairings and game times will be made available later in the week.
