It wasn’t a good moment the last time Dorain Williams was at McDonald Stadium.
The outfielder and his Butler Grizzlies’ teammates had just been swept by Fort Scott in the NJCAA Region VI tournament’s first round series, concluding Williams’ time at Butler.
Williams decided he wanted to try to rewrite a little history involving McDonald Stadium, helping the El Dorado Broncos open their season with a 9-0 victory over the Newton Rebels.
“It’s tough coming off a loss like that, especiallly when it was my sophomore year and we had the (regular) season we had,” Williams said. “It’s nice to come back here and stay in El Dorado for the summer and get something going with the Broncos.”
Williams, who will be heading to become a member of the Saint Louis Billikens program, recorded two runs batted in for the Broncos on a RBI single in the fourth and a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.
It was about the best way for the Broncos to start their 2009 season.
An almost capacity crowd got to see five members of the Broncos’ pitching staff combine for the shutout, while the offense got going after a slow start to turn the contest into a rout.
Justin Lindsey (Kansas State), the second of the five pitchers used by the Broncos, recorded the victory on the mound. Chris Craycraft (Murray State) started, followed by Lindsey, Ryan Frantz (McNeese State), Mike Nixon (Central Michigan) and Matt Theisen (Texas-Tyler).
Each pitcher threw two innings, except for Theisen and combined for five hits in the shutout (no base runner reached third base), striking out nine and walking one.
“It’s real easy on me as a coach to just pick out a guy and know he’s going to throw strikes and get outs,” said Broncos’ assistant coach Ty Reese, who was acting as head coach until Andy Schatzley arrives from Lubbock Christian. “Everyone wants to play behind a guy who throws strikes, so it was big for us on opening night to have good pitchers.
“Pitchers are usually ahead of hitters right now with these wood bats. We didn’t walk people, so that was another big thing.”
The Broncos batted around in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring four runs in both frames.
Eliot Frey (Murray State), Travis Whipple (La.-Lafayette), Garry Richards (Lyon College-Ark.) and Williams all had RBI singles in the fourth inning.

Chad Carmen (Oklahoma City) hit a two-run double to open up the scoring for the Broncos in the bottom of the fifth inning; and El Dorado added runs on the bases-loaded walk issued to Williams, and Matt Langseth (Cornell) was hit by a pitch to bring home another run.
The final run came in the seventh inning, when Barry McDonley (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) hit a RBI single to knock in Williams.
Whipple finished 3-for-4, while Carmen went 2-for-4.
“We just came out with a lot of energy,” Whipple said. “Guys just went in there and swinging at good pitches. We got a lot of walks that put runners on base, and we did pretty well with the bats for our first time.”
The Broncos play at home again tonight against the Wichita Sluggers, before starting a five-game road trip to Newton (Wednesday) and Liberal (Thursday-Sunday). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
