El Dorado, Kan. - The El Dorado Broncos’ late-season struggles continued over the weekend at McDonald Stadium against the Derby Twins. The Broncos fell behind 9-0 in Sunday’s series finale on their way to a 10-4 loss, giving the visiting Twins two out of three games in the series. The Broncos (13-17, 23-19) have lost eight of their last 10 games and are in fifth place in the Jayhawk League. Derby (18-11, 21-12) moved within a game of league leader Hays with seven games remaining. The Twins got to Bronco starting pitcher Jim Clancy for a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. In the third, Derby’s Brent Voorhees led off with a home run, and the Twins would later tack on another run to make the score 4-0. Derby opened a big lead with five runs in the fourth off Clancy and Ryan Hanna. The Broncos got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer by Chris Biguenet. After Derby scored a run in the fifth, El Dorado scored one of their own in the bottom of the frame. Matt Davis singled with one out and Jaime Armendariz walked. After a double steal, Davis scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Koch. Davis led off the seventh with a home run for the game’s final run. Davis, Koch and Biguenet each had two of the Broncos’ eight hits. Derby had 10 runs on 16 hits, giving them 26 runs on 43 hits for the series. For most of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Broncos seemed to have no answer offensively for Derby’s pitching. A late rally in the nightcap, however, enabled them to pull out a split in dramatic fashion. The first game started very roughly for El Dorado. The Twins jumped on the Broncos early for a single run in the first inning on an RBI double by Voorhees, who was thrown out at the plate by left fielder Brad Weiss trying to score on a single by Ben Theriot. In the second inning, Derby’s Jordan Cruz began his monster night with a two-run home run to give the Twins a 3-0 lead. Derby would chase Bronco starter Bryant Cotton with a four-run third inning. The Twins would add three runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh off reliever Steve Trevino. The Broncos, meanwhile, managed only two hits and four baserunners against Derby pitchers Tim Kelley and Matt Loosen. In the first, Koch doubled and Preston Springer walked with two out but did not score. Springer also doubled in the fourth, and Chad Daleiden was hit by a pitch leading off the fifth. El Dorado would fall behind again in the second game, with Cruz doing most of the damage. Cruz’ two-run homer off Josh Willimott spurred a four-run second inning, then he homered again in the third for a 5-0 Twins lead. Then, after 10 scoreless innings, the Broncos found some life with a four-run, two-out rally in the fourth. Springer doubled with one out, then five straight Broncos would reach base with two out. Mike Williams had an infield single, and Biguenet followed with a three-run homer to straight-away center field to get the Broncos on the board. Three straight singles by Daleiden, Matt Darr and Davis brought in another run to cut the lead to 5-4. Willimott and reliever Matt Kimball kept the Twins scoreless after the third inning to keep El Dorado close, which set up the dramatics in the Broncos’ final at-bat in the seventh. Davis walked with one out, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a passed ball to tie the game. After a walk to Armendariz, Koch slammed a two-run homer to left-center off closer Chris Kaminski for a walk-off game-winner. “He threw me a high fastball,” Koch said afterward. “I didn’t know it was gone until after I rounded first base, but it felt really good. We struggled as a team for most of the night, but we rallied around each other and didn’t give up. We picked each other up and found a way to win. Hopefully, we can use this win to get a winning streak going this last week of the season.” Between games Saturday, the Broncos held their Parents’ Weekend ceremonies. Several of the players’ parents and families attended the ceremony, along with the players’ host families. El Dorado’s season-ending homestand continues with a three-game series against Nevada, then wraps up with three games against Liberal. The Nevada series starts tonight at 7:05 p.m.
