El Dorado, Kan. -

The Bronco’s losses in Hays hurt the their chance for qualifying for an NBC World Series berth through the Jayhawk League.

“It certainly didn’t help,” said JD Schneider, owner and coach of the Broncos when asked about the impact of the losses on the World Series.

Only one other qualifying spot is available for the league and the Broncos are currently in fifth.

After losing the first of four games Friday night at Hays, they could not come back to overtake the Larks, losing the next three games.

This extends the Broncos’ losing streak in Hays for the past four summers to 0-16.

“We just did not play well,” Schneider said. “That’s the easiest way to put it.”

Following the loss Friday, the Broncos played a doubleheader Saturday, losing 3-11 and 2-9. Sunday they were back for one more game, but they could not make a comeback, losing this game 1-7.

But the Broncos suffered more than just the losses.

Outfielders Hunter Pace and Jared Broadbent suffered season-ending injuries in Hays. Pace pulled a hamstring trying to beat out an infield grounder. Broadbent injured his leg trying to make a sliding catch in the outfield.

The injuries have played a fairly major part in the season for the Broncos so far this summer, according to Schneider.

“Due to injuries we’ve just got to try to get recruits here over the  next couple of weeks and see how things work out,” he said.

But for their next three road games at Dodge City this week, all they can do is work hard because they will not be able to get anyone else in before those games.

There was a bright spot in the games at Hays.

Leadoff hitter Matt Davis sparkled at bat for the Broncos. The Eastern Kentucky product went 6 for 17 and made several good defensive plays at second base Sunday.

The Broncos will make their final trip of the season on Tuesday, traveling to Dodge City for a three-game series, before returning home to finish out the season. They still have Derby, Nevada and Liberal to play through the end of July.
