The El Dorado Broncos started slow in scoring runs before jumping on their opponents in their first two games of the National Baseball Congress Midwest Regional tournament at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Haysville Heat didn’t give the Broncos any chance for an offensive showing in beating El Dorado 11-2 in a winner’s bracket final between Jayhawk League teams.
The Heat scored in every inning on the way to ending the Broncos’ 14-game win streak at Lawrence-Dumont (El Dorado went 12-0 in winning last year’s regional and the 2009 NBC World Series a few weeks later).
Andrew Adams threw four innings and gave up seven runs (six earned) and eight hits in taking the loss for the Broncos (22-16).
The Broncos got out of what could have been a big jam in the first inning as the Heat (26-9) got the bases loaded after three batters. Haysville scored only one run — a sacrifice fly by Clint Stroud — as Adams struck out two to end the threat.
It only, however, slowed down Haysville as the Heat scored four more runs in the second inning. Two runs came from heads-up running on a wild pitch before KC Pfister brought in two runs with a home run to make the score 5-0.
The Heat scored single runs in the third and fourth innings. Gary Owens reached second on a throwing error to open the third and scored on a double play. Stroud knocked in his second run of the game with a RBI double in the fourth after Pfister walked and stole second.
Haysville got its first three men on base again off relierver Tyler Stefan, with Ben Kline hitting a RBI single and Scott Kimble bringing in another run on a sacrifice fly.
El Dorado scored its only runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Brian Fisher and Zack Noonan. Both runs were scored off of Heat winning pitcher Kyle Cremers.
Cremers gave up eight hits, two runs and one walk while striking out two.
Ben Harty opened up the top of the sixth with a solo home run off Stefan; and Haysville’s final run came on a bases loaded walk issued to Tim Purdin by El Dorado reliever Matt Croft.
The Broncos will have to go through the losers bracket to claim their second straight Midwest regional title with an 8 p.m. game tonight. They will play either the Derby Twins or the Wichita Elite Sluggers, who face off in a 5 p.m. first pitch scheduled game to open Wednesday play.
