El Dorado, Kan. - There’s nothing like a shutout to keep your momentum going. Or, at least, to keep from losing it completely.
El Dorado Bronco starting pitcher Josh Willimott pitched a seven-inning, complete-game, two-hit shutout against the Joplin Slashers in the late game of a doubleheader at McDonald Stadium Wednesday night, a 3-0 Bronco win. The Slashers won the opening game, 5-1, behind a complete-game three-hitter by pitcher Cody Kelly. The Broncos are now 10-9 in the Jayhawk League and 20-11 overall while Joplin is 8-17, 12-17.
The Broncos got their third shutout of the season behind the effort of Willimott, a senior-to-be at the University of Albany in New York. Willimott retired 10 straight batters between the first and fourth innings and finished with six strikeouts, one hit batter and no walks.
“I pitched pretty well in my last start, and I just wanted to keep that going,” Willimott said afterward. “It felt really good to come through for my team like that. We started a new catcher tonight (Matt Darr), and he did a great job of helping manage the game for me. I wasn’t worried about the offense because I know what they’re capable of, and I knew we’d pull through and win the game.”
The Broncos got the only offense they needed in the bottom of the first inning. Robert Abel walked with one out, stole second, took third on a single by Matt Koch and scored on a groundout by Mike Williams.
El Dorado would score twice more in the fifth. Abel led off with a double and Koch walked. Williams reached on a bunt single, and a throwing error allowed Abel and Koch to score while Williams made it to third base. One out later, with runners at first and third, Hunter Pace hit a fly ball to center, and Williams tagged at third and tried to score but was thrown out at the plate. Koch finished with two of the Broncos’ five hits in the game.
The Broncos had their seven-game losing streak snapped in the opener following three days off due to Tuesday night’s rainout. The offense simply never got going against Kelly, who allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out 10.
The Slashers scored first in the fourth inning when Will McGinnis led off with a home run to right-center off Bronco starter Chris Hord. The score would remain 1-0 until the sixth, when a two-out error by the Broncos kept the inning going and was followed by three straight RBI doubles off Hord and reliever Matt Kimball to make the score 4-0. Another Bronco error allowed another run to score in the seventh. El Dorado committed four errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs for Joplin.
El Dorado’s only run came in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff home run by Abel. Koch followed with a walk, but Kelly retired the next three batters to finish the game. Abel had two of the Broncos’ three hits.
“The two off days we had, followed by the postponement on Tuesday, I think that slowed us down a little bit, and we just never got started,” said Bronco pitching coach David Haas. “Fortunately for us, Josh had a tremendous effort on the mound in the second game. He was very strong and highly animated, and he led the team. At this point, we need every win we can get because we have a very tough road stretch coming up.”
The Broncos finish their series with Joplin at 7:05 tonight, then start their final road swing of the season. El Dorado will play four games at Hays and three at Dodge City before coming home for their final nine games, three each against Derby, Nevada and Liberal.
