El Dorado, Kan. - Sometimes, it just takes one bad inning to ruin several good innings. The visiting Nevada Griffons scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to rally for a 10-6 win over the El Dorado Broncos at McDonald Stadium Monday night. The Broncos dropped their ninth decision in their last 11 games and fell to 13-18 in the Jayhawk League and 23-20 overall. Nevada moved their record to 17-12, 24-13, moving a half-game ahead of Liberal for third place in the league standings. The Broncos started out well, particularly starting pitcher Alex Marney. The right-hander from Oklahoma State retired the first 11 batters he faced. The offense, meanwhile, gave Marney an early 3-0 lead in the third. Eric Hignojos reached on an error with one out, and Matt Davis followed with a single. Jaime Armendariz bunted the runners over to second and third, and Matt Koch walked to load the bases. Preston Springer followed with a bouncer up the middle which took a very high bounce over the second baseman and scored two runs. Chris Biguenet followed with a single to right field to score Koch. The Griffons cut the score to 3-1 in the fifth on an RBI single by Logan Meisler, but the Broncos would score twice in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-1 lead. Davis was hit by a pitch, and Armendariz and Springer walked to load the bases with one out. Biguenet hit into a force play at second but beat the relay throw to first, allowing Davis to score. With Mike Williams at the plate, Biguenet was caught taking off from first base prematurely, but the first baseman’s throw to second appeared to hit the second baseman in the face. The error allowed Armendariz to score. The second baseman was not seriously injured and stayed in the game. Nevada got to Marney for two runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Eric DeBlanc and an RBI groundout by Meisler, but Marney finished the inning and left the game with a 5-3 lead, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings. Then came the eighth, when everything went horribly wrong for the Broncos. The first four batters against reliever Matt Hinds reached base, including Dan Ward being hit by a pitch to force in a run. Taylor Geist followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game, and DeBlanc’s second RBI single of the game gave the Griffons a 6-5 lead. Tyler Redick singled with the bases loaded to score two more runs, and two more runs scored on an error by Davis. The Broncos tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth. Springer led off with a single, and Williams singled him to third with two out. Chad Daleiden followed with an RBI double down the left-field line to make it 10-6. Hignojos was retired on a ground ball to end the inning. The bottom of the ninth started out well with a single by Davis and a walk to Armendariz. After that, however, Koch struck out and Springer lined out to the shortstop. After a successful double steal, Biguenet struck out swinging to end the game. “It’s been really tough these last two weeks,” said Broncos owner-manager J.D. Schneider. “Still, this team is in good shape mentally. I’m very pleased with our chemistry and attitude right now. Some of our guys are struggling within themselves, but it’s not like they’re not making the effort. We’ve had guys leave due to injuries and other personal reasons, so we’ve got some guys playing out of position in the field. “We’re not making excuses, though. We’re still looking to add some bodies and finish the season strong and not get anybody else hurt along the way. We’re also hoping to get an invite to the NBC World Series.” The second game of the Nevada series will begin at 7:05 Tuesday night.
