El Dorado, Kan. -

Todd Reesing threw for 313 yards, including 201 to Dezmon Briscoe, to lead the Kansas University football team to a 42-21 win over Minnesota in the Insight Bowl on New Year’s Eve in Tempe, Arizona.

Kansas (8-5) won their second straight bowl game and third in four years under head coach Mark Mangino. The Jayhawks have won five of their last six bowl appearances. Minnesota (7-6) finished with five straight losses after a 7-1 start.

The Jayhawks scored on the first play from scrimmage, a 60-yard pass from Reesing to Briscoe. The Golden Gophers from the Big 10 answered by scoring on their first two possessions to take a 14-7 lead on a pair of short touchdown runs by Jon Hoese, but the Jayhawks would take control soon after, scoring the game’s next 28 points.

Reesing hit Kerry Meier for a four-yard touchdown late in the first quarter to tie the game, then found Briscoe again for a six-yard score with nine minutes left in the half to take the lead back, 21-14. Reesing’s fourth touchdown pass of the half was a four-yarder to Johnathan Wilson with 1:07 left, giving Kansas a 28-14 lead at the intermission.

In the third quarter, Kansas added to their lead on a trick play. Reesing lateraled the ball to Meier, a former quarterback, who threw a 32-yard scoring pass to Briscoe, his third of the game, to make the score 35-14. Minnesota’s Adam Weber threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Eric Decker with 13 minutes left to cut the margin to 35-21, but the Jayhawks put the icing on the cake with a two-yard touchdown run by Jake Sharp with 1:33 remaining.

Reesing completed 27 of 35 passes, 14 of them to Briscoe. Meier had 10 catches for 113 yards and a touchdown, plus his touchdown pass to Briscoe. Sharp carried the ball 16 times for 64 yards and a touchdown. Briscoe was named the game’s Offensive MVP. The Jayhawks finished with 446 yards of total offense to Minnesota’s 331 and 26 first downs.

Kansas linebacker James Holt was named the Defensive MVP after collecting eight tackles (four for losses) and three quarterback sacks. After Minnesota’s first two touchdowns, the Kansas defense held the Gophers to four punts, a turnover and a stop on downs at the 1-yard line on their next six possessions.

Through the weekend, the Big 12 Conference stands at 3-2 in bowl games this season with three teams still to play. Missouri defeated Northwestern in overtime at the Alamo Bowl Monday, 30-23; Oklahoma State lost a 10-point first-half lead in a 42-31 loss to Oregon at the Holiday Bowl Tuesday night; Nebraska defeated Clemson in the Gator Bowl on New Year’s Day, 26-21; and Texas Tech lost to Mississippi in the Cotton Bowl Friday, 47-34.
