The Wichita East Lady Aces took their best shot from the Augusta Lady Orioles and then preceded to dominate the second half on the way to a 50-41 victory in the seventh place game of the Lady Cat Classic.
The problem this season for the Lady Aces, according to coach James Cole, is that his team has wilted under pressure from opponents for the most part of the season.
“We’ve been ahead in eight of our 14 games and this is only our fourth win,” Cole said. “We’ve been trying to hold after taking people’s shots and then finish the game. When (Augusta) made their run, we stepped up and Sawyer (Hobbs) was a key to that.”
Hobbs scored 20 points; with 10 coming in the third quarter after the Lady Orioles cut the margin down to four. The Lady Aces (4-10) pushed the lead back up to nine by the end of the stanza and led by as many as 15 in the final period.
The other key for East was to clamp its defense down on Augusta ’s leading scorer Krysten Crawford. Crawford scored nine points – only two after intermission – as the Lady Orioles (1-13) had to find other ways to get the offense going.
Sophomore Taylor Williams led Augusta with a career-high 20 points, but no other Lady Oriole besides Crawford scored more than five.
NOTES: The championship game between Wichita Collegiate and Gardner-Edgerton will be played at 5 p.m. February 18 at the EHS Alumni Court. The fifth place contest between Clay Center and Winfield will not be played as schedules between the schools wouldn’t allow the teams a time to play.
