El Dorado senior Ashley Leckliter had one of her most interesting assignments on the basketball court Tuesday night when she was told to guard Clearwater star Tricia Vogel after she scored eight points in the opening quarter of their matchup.
Leckliter was able to keep Vogel in check for the other three quarters and the Lady Wildcats used their box and one defense to shut down Clearwater 39-30 in an Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League interdivisional game.
Vogel made only two field goals and scored six points after the opening stanza as Leckliter was able to stay on her assignment the entire game. And the senior also led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 11 points.
“I really liked it because I looked at it as a challenge to see how low I could keep her from scoring,” Leckliter said. “Defense leads to offense and that’s what I attribute my points to. Defense is a higher priority and offense is more of opportunity.”
El Dorado’s last game was their semifinal loss to Wichita Collegiate that saw the Lady Wildcats score only eight points in the first half. Leckliter said the team was focused after the rout three days earlier.
“The game gave us a fight and made us want to come out and prove that we were better than we showed Saturday,” Leckliter said.
Clearwater, which had won three of its last four games, took a 10-7 lead after the opening quarter and pushed ahead 14-7 with five minutes left in the second quarter when the Lady Wildcats (5-8) started their attack with the gimmick defense.
El Dorado scored the final 12 points of the half to lead by five at halftime, and scored the first nine points of the second half to lead 28-14 midway through the third quarter. The Lady Indians (7-7) scored eight of the final nine points of the stanza, but was never able to get closer than seven in the final quarter.
Seventeen of El Dorado’s 32 points after Clearwater’s initial run were scored off of Lady Indian turnovers.
“I think personally that was our best performance on both ends of the floor all year long,” said El Dorado coach Kevin Wishart. “We prepared that if (Vogel) got on a roll, then we were going to the box and one. Ashley did a good job on Vogel and defensively, we were good everywhere.”
Katlyn Utech added 10 points in the win for El Dorado.
