Wichita, Kan. - Any doubts about the Butler Community College softball team caused by two recent losses were emphatically erased this weekend at the NJCAA Division I Region VI Tournament at Wichita’s Two Rivers Youth Club. The Lady Grizzlies are going back to the NJCAA National Tournament for the second year in a row following an impressive 3-0 run through the Region VI Tournament Friday and Saturday, finishing their unbeaten effort with an 18-3 win in five innings over Barton County in Saturday’s championship round. Butler will go into the National Tournament with a sparkling 48-6 overall record. Butler made short work of the Barton Cougars in the final, scoring three runs in the first inning and four more in the second for an early 7-1 lead. The Grizzlies put the game completely out of reach with a 10-run explosion in the fourth. Butler pounded out 18 hits, giving plenty of support to pitcher Lauren Supak, who picked up the win in all three games for Butler. Supak allowed one run in four innings of work, striking out five and improving her season record to 25-1. To Barton’s credit, the Cougars had already won three straight games Saturday over Seward, Neosho and Garden City before meeting the Grizzlies following an opening-round loss to Colby Friday. In the end, though, it didn’t seem to matter to the Grizzlies. Briana Nelson was 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in six runs. Amber Hilderman was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Lauren Rorebeck had two hits in the fourth inning alone, driving in four runs. Earlier Saturday, Butler got into the championship game with a 9-5 win over Garden City in the winners’ bracket final. The Broncbusters jumped on Supak for three runs in the first inning, but Butler bounced back with four in the bottom of the inning and extended the lead to 8-4 after three innings. The Grizzlies would add an insurance run in the sixth, finishing the game with 10 hits. Supak went the distance, allowing five runs on six hits over seven innings. She struck out 12 batters, including the side in the seventh to end the game. Eight different Butler batters reached base safely while five Grizzlies had two hits each, highlighted by two-run home runs by Nelson and Gabrielle Hart. Butler’s 48 wins are just one shy of the school record set in 2006. The Lady Grizzlies have now won three straight Jayhawk Conference West Division titles and two straight Region VI Tournament titles. The 16-team NJCAA Women’s World Series begins May 15 in Plant City, Florida.
