The mood of the Winfield Lady Vikings was very disheartening after getting blown out Thursday night by Circle in the first round of the Lady Cat Classic.
An unplanned day off and a renewed spirit helped the Lady Vikings in their game Saturday afternoon with a 53-43 victory over Wichita East in a losers' bracket contest.
"We were really excited," said Winfield junior Hayli Jo Smith. "We wanted to step out so bad that the locker room was crazy. I think (the break) focused us more. We had a day of rest and another day to get ready."
The Lady Vikings scored 17 points off of East turnovers in the second half to blow open the close contest over the Lady Aces, who led 23-21 at halftime. Smith scored 11 points in the second half to lead the Winfield charge as the Lady Vikings made eight of their 13 shots and was 16-of-23 from the free throw line after intermission.
"I thought our defense was real good," said Winfield coach Dave Bertholf. "Our girls brought a lot of energy and came ready to play."
Brittany Estrada added 16 in the win for the Lady Vikings (4-7).
Kiki Miller led East (3-9) with 12 points, while Giovenni Poland added 10 points for the Lady Aces. East led 23-21 at halftime with Poland scoring seven and Ashley Malone six to help the Lady Aces build the lead.
Winfield will face Clay Center in the fifth place game of the tournament, while Wichita East will play Augusta in the seventh place game. Times and dates have not been set up and will be released by the El Dorado High athletic department as soon as possible.
