El Dorado, Kan. - The Butler Community College women’s soccer team has signed its biggest class since the inception of the program in 2002, as head coach Adam Hunter has recruited 16 high-schoolers to play for the Grizzlies in the fall of 2008.
“We are extremely excited about our newest class of Grizzlies,” Hunter said. “We’ve added speed to our roster without compromising on technical skill. We have found players to fill our needs and feel they will contribute greatly to the strong tradition of Butler women’s soccer.”
The 16 newcomers will join sophomores Jordan Staab, Caitlin Ford and Amanda Ward as the Grizzlies go for their fifth Jayhawk Conference title in six seasons.
Butler’s signees include: Sade Humphrey, Salina Central; Beth Biehler, McPherson; Ortensia Alcantara, Garden City; Sarah Flaherty, Tonganoxie; C.J. Dean, Wichita South; Sunny Rowland and C.J. Langrehr, Augusta; Gina Hernandez, Liberal; Martha Aguilar and Maribel Hernandez, Dodge City; Shelbie Walburn and Tessie Arambula, Wichita Southeast; Sarah Hernandez, Maize; Bertha Fajardo, Putnam City (OK) North; Denise Banuelos, Liberal; and Mikenna Greathouse, Shawnee Mission North.
Flaherty will likely be the new starting goaltender, replacing the departed Tori Hare. Greathouse is the younger sister of former Grizzly standout Jenna Greathouse. Walburn graduated from high school a year early. Aguilar scored 30 goals in two years of high-school soccer.
The Grizzly soccer team continued its dominance of Jayhawk Conference foes during the 2008 KJCCC Women’s Spring Shootout Tournament, which was held on the Butler campus April 26.
The Grizzlies went 4-0-1 during the tournament, defeating Johnson County in their final match to win the tournament. Butler also defeated Barton, Neosho and Allen while playing to a draw with Garden City. The Grizzlies outscored their tournament opponents by a combined score of 9-3.
Three Grizzlies were named to the All-Tournament Team: Jenna Greathouse, Margo Stuckert and Ashlee DeWitt.
Butler will finish its spring season with a match against Kansas Wesleyan, a team which played in the NAIA National Tournament last fall. The Grizzlies went through the spring season undefeated against junior college competition in three tournaments.
