Newton, Kan. - It’s not just about winning, it’s about improvement, and the El Dorado High School girls’ swim team did a lot of that at Saturday’s AVCTL Swim Meet at Newton. The Wildcats finished third in the league with 243 points. Host Newton dominated the meet with 390 points while Winfield came in second with 299. Rounding out the field were Campus, McPherson, Andover Central, Andover and Circle. “We had 32 improved times and three school records,” said EHS head coach Dennis Gumm. “That’s a tremendous effort for our girls. Kaytlan Meyer, Rachelle Warren and Megan Fleener all improved in all four events in which they swam.” El Dorado’s only league champions were the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Meyer, Warren, Remi Oda and Shelby McAllister, which won in a school-record (and State Meet qualifying) time of 1:46.31, which was just off the league meet record of 1:46.00. The same foursome also set a new school record in the 200 medley relay, placing second with a State-qualifying time of 2:00.62. The third school record came from Warren, who placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a State-qualifying time of 1:11.13. Meyer was second in the 50-yard freestyle (:25.65) while Oda took sixth (:27.09) and McAllister finished seventh (:27.37). Meyer was also third in the 100 freestyle (:57.20). Warren added another second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.08). Oda was second in the 100 butterfly (1:07.58). Melissa Martin was fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:26.18) and the 100 breaststroke (1:19.32). In the diving competition, Megen Bromlow placed third with 267.60 points while teammate Spencer Cune finished fourth with 259.20 points. The 400 freestyle relay team of McAllister, Megan Fleener, Kacie Owens and Hayley Fellers placed fifth in 4:35.08. Fleener was the top ‘Cat in the 100 backstroke, placing 10th (1:22.57). Joanna Hannum placed 13th in the 500 freestyle (7:28.97). The foursome of Meyer, Warren, Oda and McAllister will represent EHS at the State Swim Meet, which takes place next Friday and Saturday at Topeka. They will compete in the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay, with Fellers joining them as a potential alternate. Individually, Meyer will compete in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Warren will compete in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. Oda will compete in the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.
