Wyss wins RAAM event

Dani Wyss of Switzerland claimed the 2009 Race Across America title, reaching the final checkpoint in Annapolis, Md., at 9:25 p.m. (EDT) Thursday night. He finishing the 3,020-mile course in eight days, five hours and 45 minutes. It was Wyss’ second RAAM championship.

Wyss and Slovenia’s Jure Robic arrived at the 51st time station in Mt. Airy, Md., at the same time, but Robic had received a total of one hour in time penalties and according to his Web site decided not to finish the race. Robic had led Wyss by two hours and 11 minutes at the El Dorado time station.

The last group of bikers arrived in El Dorado at 3:57 a.m. Thursday.

As of 3:30 a.m. Friday (CDT), the only other finisher of the course is the Team Type 1 eight-man squad from the United States. They finished at 2:23 a.m. (EDT).
