The El Dorado City Commission approved updates to the standard traffic ordinance and public offense code during their last meeting.
The changes to the traffic ordinance incorporates certain legislative changes effective July 1 of this year. The biggest change occurred with seat belts, now making driving without being buckled up being a primary reason to stop a vehicle.
The public offense code also reflected changes made by the Kansas legislature.
The biggest change here is that smoking is no longer allowed in public places.
Mayor Tom McKibban said they would like to see the changes before the meeting so they would have time to look over them.
“What we’re saying is we don’t mind approving it, but we really would like to know what we approving,” McKibban said.
Commissioner Shane Krause asked about tabling it until they see all of the changes, but he was told it would be easy to change back if they don’t like some of the changes.
The commission approved both ordinances amending the codes unanimously.
