Hospice Care of Kansas is presenting “Focus on the Caregiver” Sept. 9.

The keynote speaker for the program will be Dr. Jerry Old, author of “The Vintage People & A Practical Guide To Palliative Care.”

The presentation will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hubbard Welcome Center at Butler Community College.

This is important because caregivers often become more ill than those for whom they are caring.

There will be five sessions focusing on caregiver needs and a special presentation at lunch. They include:

• expectations of the caregiver,

• grief and spiritual needs of the caregiver,

• dementia and the effects on the caregiver,

• symptom management, and

• a panel: how Hospice Care of Kansas supports the caregiver.

The curriculum also includes several common threads integrated throughout, including:

• the family unit of care,

• the importance of culture as it influences decision making as a caregiver,

• the promotion of healthy grief for the family system,

• end-of-life issues impact all systems of care across all settings,

• transition from curative to comfort care: establish good plan of care,

• identify communication barriers for patients/ families, and

• interdisciplinary care is essential for quality care at the end of life.

Speakers will include: Betty Bachman, LMSW; Nadine Friesen, MA; Sally Goodson, R.Ph.; Manirva Earple Hickenooper, DLS; and Jerry L. Old, M.D.

The workshop is designed for nurses, nursing students, chaplains, nursing home administrators, social workers, case managers, funeral home directors and volunteers.

A certificate of completion will be granted after the one-day event for those seeking 5 1/5 hours of CEU credits.

The fee is $10 and includes the workshop, lunch and handouts. The registration deadline is Sept. 6.

Registration is from 8 to 8:30 a.m. For more information, contact Toni Hare at 321-4249 or toni.hare@voyagerhospice care.com.
