Shirly and Irvin Burnhenn of El Dorado enjoy their flowers, as do those passing by their home on Osage.

The Burnhenns have a large variety of lilies in bloom right now, including Oriental and Asian lilies, in a variety of colors.

“When we bought the house, they were here,” Shirly explained.

They just care for and tend the flowers.

“I think I have learned so much about lilies,” she said. “It’s fun to gather knowledge. I didn’t know there were so many varieties.

“They’re all quite different,” she said. “We have people stop and ask us about them.”

The flowers line the side of the yard, with more in the front yard.

“They are just exquisite,” she said.

Shirly and Irvin spent numerous hours weeding and getting the flower beds back in shape after they bought the home. The woman from whom they bought the home was in a wheelchair and could not tend all of them.

“It’s been worth it because they are just a delight to be around,” Shirly said.

To help with their gardening knowledge, Shirly took a Master Gardener class in 2005 and she remains a Master Gardener.

“We’ve always gardened,” she explained. “I took the Master Gardener course, but he’s the master of the garden.”
